Energy Therapies in the Treatment of Addictive Behaviors:
Cravings, Relapse, and Resistance

A workshop

Energy Therapies are based upon the belief that emotional problems and cravings can be viewed and treated as blocked life energy, or blocked body energy. This blocked energy creates emotional or physical discomfort, pain, or cravings. The blocked, or stuck, energy lies somewhere along the energy meridians addressed in acupuncture and other Eastern schools of healing. Treatment involves determining where the energy is stuck and determining the treatment point(s) to stimulate along the involved meridians in order to un-block or free the energy. The client is shown where to tap (using their fingers) on the treatment points. Tapping the treatment points frees the stuck energy and either reduces (eliminates) the craving, or reduces (eliminates) the unpleasant emotional experience depending upon whether the problem identified was a craving or emotional discomfort/pain.

An important element in the effective utilization of an energy therapy protocol is the identification and treatment of psychological reversals or self limiting beliefs the client might have that would sabotage or short circuit the treatment. These beliefs, usually beneath conscious awareness, or just at the edge of conscious, often block progress and contribute to resistance. Self limiting beliefs are also major contributors to relapse. Self limiting beliefs familiar to drug abuse and alcoholism counselors would include; “I don't deserve happiness,” “I'm not good enough to achieve sobriety,” “I can't do this,” etc.

As long as a belief of this type hold power in the client's conscious or subconscious mind, the prognosis for long term sobriety is poor. Reducing or eliminating these beliefs greatly effects a more favorable prognosis. Identification and removal of self-limiting beliefs is of significant benefit to any type of approach utilized in helping people change patterns of behavior which are not successful, healthy, or personally rewarding.

The Energy Therapies all have their roots in oriental medicine and the modern science of Applied Kinesiology. The therapies work well with all cultures and with all age groups. They are readily taught and easily learned. They are not a quick fix, however they do allow for rapid reduction of many of the internal obstacles which impede psychotherapeutic movement and the resolution of issues.
